Acupuncture for Kids

Acupuncture for children has surprising advantages, one of which it has no side effects. It is an effective treatment for many common childhood conditions. Increasingly more parents are turning into acupuncture as an efficient and necessary method to restore and maintain their children’s overall health.

Each treatment is unique and tailored to the child’s age, current condition, and comfort with treatment. In my practice I have been fortunate enough to treat newborns, as well as toddlers, preschoolers, elementary aged kids, preteens and teens.  For babies and young children. I do not use needles, but rather needle-less acupuncture technique. Typically by age 7 or 8, kids tolerate needles well.  I always work with the child to find the best form of treatment for them.

Acupuncture for kids is painless,  needles used are very fine  they are about the size of a strand of hair. For young children a rapid needling technique is used, where the needle is inserted and immediately taken out. Babies and children do not have to sit still for more than a few seconds at a time.

When it comes to treating potential lifelong ailments it is important to treat early on in life, making them more manageable and reducing the risk of it leading to greater problems down the road, giving your child a greater opportunity to grow into a healthy adult. Preventative treatment can be administered once a month to ensure proper immune function and prevent any lingering ailment from turning into chronic problems.

Acupuncture is a complementary therapy, it does not replace conventional medicine. It cannot treat everything; If you have asthma, you still need your asthma medication. For more cases It is a great addition to conventional medical treatment, to reduce pharmaceutical side effects and speed up recovery.

Shonishin literally translates as sho “little”, ni “children”, and shin “needle.” It is a gentle and noninvasive technique, special tools are used to  stroke, tap, rub, and press the skin. Shonishin mimics the effects of acupuncture.  The treatment process typically takes 5-15  minutes, depending on the age and strength of the child. Occasionally very small press sphere are placed on specific acupuncture points for extra stimulation, and are taken off a day after treatment.

During treatments, parents are encouraged to be present and they will also be shown how to use certain pressure points between sessions to enhance treatments.

Shonishin offers a viable alternative to pharmaceuticals in the treatment of childhood health problems. It has been used with some success in treating infants and children afflicted with a wide variety of conditions, including colic, indigestion, GERD, constipation, and diarrhea, ADD/ADHD, allergies, asthma, eczema, hives, bedwetting, and stuttering.
